Black Friday

In the USA there is Thanksgiving Thursday to commemorate the slaughter of indigenous peoples… uh… I mean to give thanks for being alive!

Anyway, some years ago people went crazy Christmas shopping the day after since many had work off that day. It eventually became called “Black Friday”.

The “Black” refers to an accounting ledger where you use black ink for positive cash and red ink for negative. Many retailers would be in the red, but sell so much stuff on that Friday that they were suddenly “in the black”.

Even though “Thanksgiving” is just a USA thing, being a global capitalist/consumptivist world such as we are, “Black Friday” became global.

Sometimes there are good deals. Sometimes people get trampled in the rush to buy shit. Mostly, it’s just an excuse to buy stuff and not feel too guilty about it.

And in SL, since the Marginal Cost of just about everything is 0, retailers are able to offer huge Black Friday discounts. Many shops, including expensive Mesh Head, Mesh Body, and Skin shops, offer 50% off deals. If you’re going to refresh your look once a year, Black Friday’s not a bad weekend to do it.
